Sticks-2-Schools Helps Schools “Lighten the Load” with Donation from New Age Electric

San Jose, CA – February 09, 2009 – Sticks-2-Schools, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting childhood obesity, welcomes their newest sponsor, New Age Electric. The San Jose electrical contractor partnered with Sticks-2-Schools as a Diamond Breakaway sponsor, donating a total of $3,000 to the program. New Age Electric made its first $2,000 donation this month and will follow with the remaining $1,000 later this year. Their contribution will help provide physical activities for youth by funding the Sticks-2-Schools program at a Bay Area school of their choice.

Now in its fifth season, Sticks-2-Schools has provided more than 40,000 students with a fun and engaging way to get physically fit. Seventy-three Bay Area schools have implemented Sticks-2-Schools’ lacrosse curriculum into their physical education (PE) or after-school program. The multidimensional co-ed sport of “soft” lacrosse (using flexible sticks and softer balls than professional lacrosse) can be played indoors or out by children with a range of athletic abilities. Sticks-2-Schools ensures that each school is game-ready by supplying them with free lacrosse equipment, curriculum guides and on-site training by members of the Bay Area’s professional lacrosse team, the San Jose Stealth.

“As a business owner in the Bay Area, I’m also a member of the community. I felt that it was important to contribute to Sticks-2-Schools because those students are the future of our community. Their health should be a priority,” said Kurt Rocklage, president of New Age Electric.

Desiccated school budgets have caused a draught in physical education curriculums. PE classes help children stay physically active as well as provide an outlet for movement and fun; however, many schools are decreasing the number of PE activities offered and even eliminating sports programs altogether. California schools are required to provide students with a total of three hours of physical education over a ten-day time span. This translates to just 20 minutes a day. While students in grades seven through twelve are allowed 40 minutes per day, by the time they are in middle school many of them have already embraced inactivity as a way of life.

“Economic pressures are taking their toll on Bay Area schools, which is why Sticks-2-Schools donates time, energy and sports equipment to keep physical education in the curriculum. Making physical activity fun for kids and introducing them to a unique sport gives them the opportunity to enjoy being active – a trait that we hope will stay with them for a lifetime,” said S2S President and Teamwrkx CEO Eric Venzon.
