Sticks-2-Schools Receives Donation from Bay Area Asphalt & Cement Works to Help Pave Way for 73rd School to Join Program, Use Lacrosse to Fight Childhood Obesity
San Jose, CA --- February 17, 2009 --- Sticks-2-Schools (S2S), a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting childhood obesity, is now able to fund the next school on their waiting list thanks to a generous donation from Bay Area Asphalt & Cement Works. The San Jose-based asphalt and concrete construction company became an S2S Diamond Sponsor by donating $2,000, with an additional $1,000 due to arrive later this year. Since its founding in 2005, the Sticks-2-Schools program has reached an estimated 40,000 students in 72 schools in the Greater Bay Area.
The goal of Sticks-2-Schools is to help children get fit by learning to become more active. In Santa Clara County alone, more than 20 percent of children are overweight or obese. A grim 75 percent of these children will grow up to be overweight or obese adults. Funded by donations from private sponsors and fundraising activities, S2S helps combat this epidemic by providing children with a new and exciting outlet for energetic fun and increased physical fitness.
“Programs like Sticks-2-Schools teach our children more than just sports – they also encourage team-building skills and provide the foundation for supporting healthier lifestyles to these, and future generations. Having raised three children of our own, my husband and I truly understand the value and need for extracurricular activities, especially in times such as these, when it is apparent that so many of our schools are lacking appropriate funding,” said Bay Area Asphalt & Cement Works Vice President Jackey Kolander.
S2S helps schools implement lacrosse into physical education (PE) curriculum, giving students a unique way to increase physical activity. The sport is taught to students as non-contact “soft lacrosse,” so that it can be played both indoors and out by boys and girls with differing athletic abilities. The S2S program donates lacrosse equipment and curriculum guides to each school in the program. Additionally, players from the professional indoor lacrosse team, the San Jose Stealth, provide program schools with on-site visits to help teachers and students learn how to play the game.
